Ski Conditions Report for Park City Canyons Utah
Day 9- November 26, 2014
Went up to ski Park City in the afternoon. It was bluebird sunny, really warm and crowded. The Bonanza lift was open, so 2500 vertical was to be skied. Even some all-natural black diamond runs were open. They were thin and rocky but great to get away from all the out of control people on the groomers. It's going to great when the Canyons opens and we can spread these people out.
Day 8- November 25, 2014
After lots of working and packaging up and sending some glove samples requested by SKI and Skiing Magazine, I headed to Park City Mountain Resort for some late afternoon skiing. It was warm, about 32 degrees and snowing lightly. Lots of people on the few runs that were open and by 2 PM it was pretty icy/skied off. But today I finally went to my better skis that have fast bases. What a change! Rock skis still need to be good skis.
Day 7- November 24, 2014
We received another foot of snow on the Park City side of the range. 3 Day totals of 2 feet on the PC side and up to 4 feet up high in Little Cottonwood Canyon (Alta, Snowbird). PCMR had the same 3 runs open today with good, but very slow snow. Some of our team members skied some deep powder up high in the closed in-bounds terrain of Deer Valley. The true backcountry is still super dangerous with 4 feet of new snow on old, faceted snow from October and early November. Skied with Cutter and Bruce.
Day 6- November 23, 2014
Park City Mountain Resort bluebird after a foot of new snow. Probably a lot more on top, but alas it was just a few runs open. The same man-made snow runs as the day before. Snow quality good natural with the new snow but really crowded. They should be able to get more terrain open soon. Skied with Cutter, Adam and Nina. We shredded of course. Was going to go to Deer Valley after the morning but headed home to work.
Day 5- November 22, 2014
Opening day at Park City Mountain Resort. Warm, dumping snow and really wet. Kind of a cluster with so many people and only a few runs of man-made snow, but much more extensive than previous years at the Canyons/Park West. The terrain for limited opening day was much better. Lots more vert off the Payday lift. It was great to get out and talk to people about Free the Powder. The number one question everyone asks is, "Where can I see this or get these in town?" And there is always equal confusion when I answer, "No one would return our inquiries." Huh? Local ski shops in Park City probably don't want a local company's $60 high quality glove hanging next to $120-$180 products with the same quality.
Oh well, eventually they will.
Skied with Micah, Jamie and Cutter. We shredded it! Big storm rolling in tonight. Hope it dumps.
Day 4- November 17, 2014
A nice 1 hour hike up Flagstaff Mountain at Deer Valley's Silver Lake Village area. Cold, bluebird day of skiing on man-made snow. Giant piles of man-made snow everywhere. Deer Valley has very impressive snow-making capacity. Still out of shape so it was a bit tough plowing up behind Team Free the Powder members Ryan Cutter and Will. (They're skinny guys who mountain bike a lot).
Day 3- November 16, 2014
Got up really early and headed out for glove testing in sub-zero temps. Today was bluebird, but very cold in the shade. Went with short cuff gloves, parked at Empire Canyon Lodge and headed up Empire. No man-made snow over here in Deer Valley, so it was very thin. Not really skiable other that down the uptrack. Gloves worked really good for warmth. As a mitten-only wearer for my 40 year ski career, the new design is a revelation.
Day 2- November 15, 2014
First ski day near home. Went up in the late afternoon to Deer Valley, Silver Lake area. Hiked up through the blasting, snow-making guns. It was a good second workout of the season in the gear. Not much snow off of the man-made, but at least there was the man-made.
Day 1- November 14, 2014
Finally got out of the warehouse (Bunker) and got some fresh air. Launching this kind of business is brutal, so it's incredible to get out and do some field work, testing gloves. It's amazing, gloves that seem too small in a 70 degree room all of a sudden become too big in the cold. (Hint, hands swell a bit in warmth).
Very little snow in Upper Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah for this late date. I hiked up the man-made snow at Alta Ski Area, where there were a few other people desperate for turns and kickers. There was maybe a foot of snow off the man-made run. The man-made run, Collins Gulley was track pack nasty, leg breaker "snow". Went up about half way, totally out of shape from working so much and no mountain biking since August (broke arm). Just great to get out though.
Talked to some old timers. It's awesome to speak my native tongue again (Skier). Everyone else was picking their way down the side of the man-made snow run, but not me, I shredded the gnar!
